A fatal collision occurred early Tuesday morning on northbound Interstate 15 just south of State Route 76 in Fallbrook, leaving one driver dead after their vehicle became engulfed in flames beneath a USPS semi-trailer.
The crash was first reported at approximately 2:49 a.m. Callers alerted authorities to a vehicle that had collided with the rear of a semi-truck and was beginning to catch fire. Witnesses described the vehicle as being lodged underneath the trailer in the northbound lanes of the freeway.
When emergency responders arrived, they found the car fully involved in flames beneath the rear of a United States Postal Service trailer. Fire crews worked quickly to extinguish the blaze, but tragically, the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and the driver of the semi-truck is believed to be unharmed.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is leading the investigation and has not yet released the identity of the deceased. Officials say the circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation, including whether speed, impairment, or distraction were factors.
Northbound I-15 traffic was significantly impacted during the morning hours as investigators worked at the scene. Lane closures remained in effect as of early Tuesday morning to accommodate the crash investigation and removal of the wreckage.
