A dramatic vehicle theft and pursuit ended in a citizen’s arrest Monday morning after a suspect stole a truck from the Dana Landing area and led police and Good Samaritans on a dangerous chase through Mission Bay and Ocean Beach. The incident began around 7:45 a.m. at the Action Sports Kayak Rental business on Dana Landing Road, where two men were preparing for a fishing trip. The owner of a blue Chevy Silverado suddenly heard his truck engine start. A male suspect had climbed inside and was driving off.
The truck’s owner and his companion immediately gave chase, with the friend jumping into his vehicle and pursuing the suspect. The stolen vehicle sped from Mission Bay into Ocean Beach, where the driver realized he was being followed. Attempting to avoid traffic near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and West Point Loma Boulevard, the suspect drove the wrong way down the road, ramming into two vehicles in the process, including a white truck.
The erratic escape attempt continued toward the Sunset Cliffs Bridge, where traffic had come to a complete standstill. The suspect abandoned the Silverado and fled on foot over the bridge and across the San Diego River into the Marina Village area on Quivara Road.
There, he attempted to steal a second vehicle from another fisherman. According to witnesses, the suspect grabbed the man’s phone and told him, “I have a gun, give me your keys, I’m on the run.” Before he could make off with the second car, another nearby Good Samaritan intervened, tackling the suspect to the ground. San Diego Police arrived shortly after and took the male suspect into custody without further incident. Authorities confirmed the suspect will face multiple felony charges, including grand theft auto, hit-and-run, attempted carjacking, and possibly making criminal threats. No injuries have been reported among the victims, though property damage to several vehicles occurred.
