Man Sought After Arson Fire Destroys Vehicle at Pacific Grove Apartments

An early morning vehicle fire at the Pacific Grove Apartments in San Diego is being investigated as arson, after a man was caught on video intentionally setting the blaze that completely engulfed a parked Buick. At approximately 6:44 a.m. on Saturday, firefighters responded to reports of a car fire at 4025 Oakcrest Drive. Upon arrival, crews found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. They quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby cars and apartment structures. No injuries were reported at the scene. According to witnesses, including the vehicle’s owner, the suspect is a homeless male who had previously been allowed to stay with the owner’s family for several months. She told authorities she had recently asked him to leave due to ongoing behavioral issues. Security video provided by a resident shows the suspect approaching the Buick with a small sledgehammer, smashing the driver’s side window, and dousing the interior with gasoline from a red gas can. He then tossed the can inside the vehicle and ignited the fire. The ignition caused a powerful explosion inside the car, which blew back on the suspect, possibly burning his face and hands. He was last seen fleeing the scene and dropping personal items nearby. The Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) is now leading the investigation. Law enforcement officials are checking local hospitals for anyone seeking treatment for facial or hand burns that may match the suspect.
