A tragic collision late Sunday night resulted in one fatality after a two-vehicle crash erupted into flames on the 91 Freeway near Cherry Avenue in Long Beach.
Emergency crews from the Long Beach Fire Department were dispatched at approximately 10:24 p.m. to reports of a two-car accident. Responding units discovered a black Scion XB and a white sedan, both exhibiting heavy front-end damage. At least one of the vehicles — believed to be the Scion XB — became engulfed in flames and burned on the freeway.
California Highway Patrol officers investigating the scene located a deceased individual on the eastbound side of the 91 Freeway. The body had been struck by a vehicle and propelled into the westbound lanes. Authorities believe the person may have been the driver of the Scion XB, although confirmation is pending. The chaotic nature of the collision has made initial details unclear. It is unknown how many vehicles may have struck the victim, or whether all involved drivers remained at the scene. CHP investigators are working to piece together the chain of events. A woman driving a black SUV was seen speaking with officers, though her involvement in the crash has not yet been confirmed. No other injuries have been reported as of this time. The 91 Freeway in both directions was severely impacted as law enforcement and fire crews worked to secure the area, extinguish the fire, and begin the investigation.
