Tragedy struck the city of Norco on Monday afternoon when a 79-year-old man was killed during a violent carjacking. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that deputies were dispatched around 12:22 p.m. to the 600 block of Hidden Valley Parkway in response to a reported carjacking involving a silver SUV. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage before issuing an alert to surrounding law enforcement agencies. Shortly thereafter, officers with the Corona Police Department discovered an adult male suffering from traumatic injuries on Hidden Valley Parkway, east of the initial carjacking scene. The man, later identified as James Norman, a Corona resident, appeared to have been ejected from the stolen vehicle. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit quickly took over the investigation. The stolen SUV was later recovered, unoccupied, near Polk Street and Magnolia Avenue in Riverside. With the help of the Riverside Police Department, a suspect was detained near Magnolia Avenue and Tyler Street. The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Ryan Hewitt, also a resident of Corona. Following further investigation, Hewitt was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on charges of carjacking and murder.
