Tragedy struck early Thursday morning in West El Paso after a violent multi-vehicle crash involving a heavy-duty tow truck left one person dead and eight others injured. The accident occurred just before 6:50 a.m. along Transmountain Road near North Desert Boulevard and the I-10 freewayAccording to investigators, the incident began when a heavy-duty tow truck hauling a semi-truck reportedly lost its brakes while descending Transmountain Road. Unable to stop, the truck barreled through traffic, slamming into several vehicles before erupting into flames. The out-of-control tow truck continued for approximately 800 feet, tearing through street lights and construction barriers before finally coming to a stop near a construction zone. One fatality was confirmed at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of the next of kin. Emergency responders from multiple agencies rushed to the scene, where they encountered widespread wreckage and injured victims. Of the eight individuals hurt in the crash, one was airlifted by F-Start helicopter in serious condition, and another was transported via ambulance in critical condition. Four others sustained minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals, while two individuals declined medical treatment. Due to the severity of the crash and the resulting fire, all lanes of traffic were closed in both directions along key roadways, including Spur 16 at Talbot, North and South Desert Boulevard, and Transmountain Road near the I-10 freeway. The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) and Special Traffic Investigators were on scene for several hours to conduct a full investigation and oversee cleanup operations.
