A chaotic scene unfolded Wednesday evening in Orange when a dog running loose on the freeway caused multiple vehicles to swerve and crash, resulting in one car overturning on the northbound 57 Freeway just south of Orangewood Avenue. The incident was reported at approximately 7:21 p.m. California Highway Patrol (Santa Ana division) and Orange City Fire Department responded to the scene following several 911 calls reporting a dog on the roadway and a traffic collision. According to witness accounts, drivers were forced to take evasive action to avoid the dog darting across lanes. In the process, at least two vehicles collided, with one vehicle overturning in the aftermath. The driver of the overturned vehicle miraculously self-extricated and, despite sustaining injuries, declined transport by AMR paramedics. No other serious injuries were reported at the scene. The dog that caused the incident managed to exit the freeway and has not yet been located. Authorities have not confirmed whether animal control was able to track the animal.CHP is continuing its investigation into the incident and reminds motorists to use caution and reduce speed when encountering animals or obstacles on the road.
