TEMECULA, CA — The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department provided details Thursday regarding two juveniles who sustained serious injuries in an electric motorcycle crash earlier this week near N. General Kearny and Nicolas roads in Temecula.
The incident prompted an urgent advisory from the law enforcement agency to all parents in Southwest Riverside County.
According to the sheriff’s department, the two juveniles were operating a Sur-Ron e-motorcycle on North General Kearny Road when they collided with a Honda sedan on Nicolas Road at approximately 7:59 p.m. on Wednesday.
“The juveniles were thrown from the motorcycle and suffered significant injuries,” the sheriff’s department stated. “The motorcycle … was lacking fundamental safety equipment necessary for road use.”
The driver of the Honda did not sustain any injuries, according to the agency. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Southwest Sheriff’s Station, and no arrests have been made.
The sheriff’s department cautioned that an e-bike lacking pedals and with a motor exceeding 750 watts — similar to the one involved in the accident — cannot legally be ridden by unlicensed individuals on public roads.
To operate an e-motorcycle legally, the following requirements must be met, as per the sheriff’s department:
- Possession of a valid motorcycle license issued by the DMV
- Wearing a DOT-certified motorcycle helmet
- Possession of valid registration
- Maintaining minimum liability motorcycle insurance
Anyone with information regarding the crash is urged to contact Deputy Ott of the Southwest Sheriff’s Station at 951-696-3000 or the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department at 951-776-1099.
