RIVERSIDE, CA — Two students from Ramona High School in Riverside were injured on the morning of February 2 when they were struck by a car while using a crosswalk in front of the school, according to the Riverside Police Department.
The incident occurred at around 8:13 a.m. as the girls were crossing the street, headed to the north side of Magnolia Avenue where the school is located. The eastbound car hit the students, sending one about 40 feet and landing under another car on Cortez Street at Magnolia. The second student came to rest about 60 feet from the point of impact.
Both girls are expected to survive their injuries. The driver of the car, a man, was hospitalized for observation, and there is no indication that alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
The police are investigating the incident to determine fault, with witness interviews and surveillance video being reviewed. Magnolia Avenue was temporarily closed in both directions for the investigation, but all lanes were reopened before 10 a.m.
The Riverside Police Department emphasized the shared responsibility of drivers and pedestrians for each other’s safety and encouraged pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
