Residents and motorists in Big Bear City face treacherous road conditions as the neighborhood streets remain buried under a 2-inch-thick layer of pure ice, known as “sheet ice.” Numerous vehicles have spun out and crashed, with locals stepping in to assist stranded drivers. Snow flurries continued to fall intermittently throughout the day, further complicating travel conditions. Earlier in the morning, a school bus carrying children was involved in an icy pile-up at Dawn Road and Highway 18. By the time authorities arrived, the situation had been resolved. CHP confirmed that all children were safely transported from the scene using alternate transportation, and no injuries were reported.Despite hazardous conditions in neighborhoods, major highways leading to Big Bear, including Highway 18 and Highway 330, have been cleared of ice and snow up to Big Bear Dam. However, a Chain Control checkpoint remains active at Snow Valley for safety precautions. Meanwhile, in Lake Arrowhead, a pickup truck lost control on ice near Highway 189 and Daly Canyon, veering nearly 200 feet through an intersection, across a snow-packed parking lot, and into a cedar tree on a hillside. The occupants appeared unharmed, but CHP is investigating the crash.
